Alopecia Hair Loss Treatment

Alopecia means partial or complete loss of hair and mostly occurs on the scale as well as bearded areas, eye brows and eyelashes. Alopecia can affect anyone: it occurs in males and females of all ages and races, although it tends to be more common in childhood through to early adulthood. Up to 70 percent of men, and 40 percent of women, will experience this androgen mediated alopecia at some point in their lives.

The most common type of alopecia hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. The second most common type of alopecia is traction alopecia. This type of alopecia is usually seen in women who prefer tightly done hairstyles such as braiding. The hair loss pattern associated with his type of alopecia depends on the direction of the braid or hairstyle and is most noticed at the tightest point of the hairstyle.

Baldness and thinning hair, medically called alopecia, is most often considered a mans problem. With male pattern alopecia, hair loss is gradual and usually affects the thinner, shorter, and less pigmented hairs of the frontal and parietal portions of the scalp. Male pattern alopecia (hair loss) is due to genetic factors and the effect of testosterone hormone on central scalp hair follicles over a lifetime.
